Hello, I am Professor Shitij Kapur, Vice Chancellor & President of King’s College London. On behalf of everyone at King’s, our heartfelt congratulations to you on securing your place to study with us. This is a significant milestone in your academic journey, a moment of celebration and a culmination of many years of hard work and perseverance. You should be immensely proud of your achievements. We certainly are.
In joining King’s, you become part of a story stretching back almost two hundred years. You become part of a distinguished community which includes alumni such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Biophysicist Rosalind Franklin, who demonstrated the double-helix structure of DNA, and medal-winning sprinter, Dina Asher-Smith, who competed in the Olympics. Our students seek knowledge with purpose and, in the process, find friends, inspiration, and a direction for their lives.
I know that starting university can be daunting, so I encourage you to make the most of the many activities which will be taking place during Welcome Week which will help you to navigate life at King's. There are Welcome Hubs all across our campuses, the KCL Students Union Welcome Fair, and our popular Welcome Panel event. I also invite you to join our wonderful Opening of the Year Celebration on 20th September. Mark it in your calendars. The ceremony includes music, dance and performance, and is a great opportunity to engage with the King’s community. You can join us in person or watch it in one of our livestream venues, so keep an eye out for ticketing details.
As you begin this new chapter, remember that every challenge you have faced has prepared you for the exciting opportunities ahead, and that we are here to support you through every step of your journey at King’s. Many congratulations again. I hope that over the coming weeks you will find some time to celebrate and relax, and we look forward to welcoming you to campus soon. You can see the fine city of London behind me, and we look forward to welcoming you at King's.
