Developing Student Agency in Assessment through the Use of Feedback Literacy

In order for students to optimise their learning from assessment they need to be able to understand and utilise the feedback they receive from the assessments they undertake. Feedback is an integral part of any assessment process and a student’s ability to use it effectively is influential in their success (Carless et al. 2011). Feedback literacy is a relatively new concept developed from an understanding that feedback needs to be a dialogic process in which the student develops their own agency.

In this talk I will be discussing the use of the Developing Engagement with Feedback Toolkit (DEFT) (Winstone and Nash 2016) from the Higher Education Academy. The toolkit is utilised to support the development of feedback literacy for undergraduate students through the use of learning activities including lectures, seminars and a feedback guide.
