Beverly, an MSc Orthodontics student in the Dental Institute was awarded money from The Student Opportunity Fund. The functional appliance and straight wire today courses cover the theoretical and clinical aspects of two types of orthodontic appliances which are fundamental to contemporary orthodontics. The functional appliance course covered the types and indications for various appliances and appraised the classical and contemporary literature as well as the clinical knowledge and experience of presenters who are renowned experts in this field of dentistry. 

The straight wire today course has been running annually since 1985. This course covers the scientific and clinical evidence basis underpinning the use of the straight wire appliance which has revolutionised contemporary orthodontic practice.
